The Rhodes Scholarship, one of the most competitive and prestigious awards, funds two or three years of post-bachelor study at Oxford University in Great Britain. The award covers educational and living expenses. Initiated after the death of Cecil Rhodes in 1902, the scholarships bring outstanding students from nineteen countries and five continents to Oxford University.Two Global Rhodes Scholarships will be awarded during the 2018 application cycle. University nomination is required.

Eligibility requirements

  • Candidates from any country that is not an exisiting Rhodes jurisdiction. See list.
  • Must have a minimum 3.75 GPA
  • Earn bachelor's degree before October 2019
  • At least 18 but not yet 25 years of age by October 1st in the year of application
  • English language: You must have a sufficiently high standard of English to meet the English language proficiency requirements (at the Higher Level listed) of the University of Oxford.

Selection criteria

The Selection Committee for the Rhodes Global Scholarship is looking for outstanding young leaders who are motivated to engage with global challenges and to promote international understanding and peace. In short, the Selection Committee seeks young people of outstanding intellect, character, leadership, and commitment to service, and who demonstrate a strong propensity to emerge as 'leaders for the world’s future'.

Application requirements

 A completed online campus application form and the following:

  • Personal statement
  • List of principal college activities and honors.
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities and colleges you have attended
  • Five letters of recommendation (at least three must be from persons with whom the applicant has done academic work at a college or university)

Global Rhodes applicants should make an individual advising appointment with Alicia Hayes. If you are a recent graduate without an @berkeley.edu address, you must also contact Alicia Hayes to schedule an advising appointment in order to gain access to the campus application.

Applications must be endorsed by UC Berkeley before they can be submitted to the Rhodes Trust. In the endorsement process, the campus selection committee reviews application materials and selects Berkeley's nominees.
